We made the best of it...
The campground and the park aren't associated with each other. It will cost you $7 to get in the first day even with a paid reservation.
The camp store doesn't seem to have any set hours. Some nights they close at 8:30 other nights the doors are locked at 8.
Guess I understand why they don't give refunds. It's only Wednesday and we're here until Sunday.
Been camping here for years. I primarily tent camp in the "tent only" sites which are right on the lake and almost completely shaded by the trees.
The firewood here is $6 a bundle. It's small and dry we went through a full bundle at every meal. Bring your own.
We attended a free snake demonstration, the snake was brand new to the park and aggressive. On the other hand, hearing him hiss and rattle at the naturalist was pretty cool.
We wanted to take the kids on their first camping trip. We reserved a non-electric camp site for 10 days. It cost $200. I expected a primitive campsite. That's what most people are looking for when they camp non-electric. What I got was a picnic table and grill in the middle of a grassy field with a few trees thrown in. We were close enough to our neighbors to hear casual conversations clearly. The only wildlife to speak of was a few squirrels and birds. We didn't even need to pack up our food at night because there were too many people for the raccoons to exist. Our campsite was advertised as "morning sun". What they meant was there's a tree directly overhead so you get an hour of shade at noon. This camp site is great if you don't actually want to camp in the woods. As for relaxing? Listening to my neighbor fart all night isn't really on my list.
Very nice and pretty place. Nice people. Good place to relax. A great place to go with friends and family.
We wanted to attend an edibles hike. The flyer said "campground playground" at 7:30. We went to the only playground we could see from our campsite, and the only one visible from the entrance to the park. After half an hour, we asked at the camp store and they said it must have been at "the other playground". I'll update when we find out where that is.
I usually camp in Michigan State parks, so I have high expectations, and it wasn't too bad. There is lake access directly from about half the sites. The trouble from this is that a lot of the sites are on slopes, which make leveling a camper challenging. There were multiple washrooms, so you don't have to usually walk too far, although some are old. The staff are out and about, but I didn't see them very attentive. Neighbors woke me up at 3 being loud and drunk by their campfire for a while, never saw any DNR. Watched a couple people bring dogs on the beach, looked at them watch from their truck, then drive away. But overall, it's a pretty good campground.
The restrooms and showers work but are dated and probably should be replaced. Always have an enjoyable time when I stay here. Camping staff at the front gate is always friendly and helpful.
Very nice, plenty of restrooms and showers, camp sites could be bigger or at least some ways apart
